Cleaning Up Australian Politics

Australia has one of the world’s most robust democracies, but it is under threat.

Australians value our democracy, but our trust in government is declining, especially among young people. Over half of us are concerned that we are not on the right path: there are no laws requiring politicians to be truthful during election campaigns; hidden corporate money is influencing government policy; and recent electoral “reform” laws were designed to keep independents out of parliament.

But communities are fighting back, calling for laws that help keep governments honest and voting for Community Independents prepared to stand up for transparency and integrity. With success! Pressure from independents has recently led to reforms that will abolish lobbyists’ ability to walk around Parliament House with ease and secrecy 24 hours a day. But there’s more to do.

Join us as we discuss how big corporations are influencing government, corrupting our democracy and making Australia less fair -- and learn first-hand what Community Independents are doing to push back against this madness.

Speakers:

Dr Lindy Edwards, expert on political donations, lobbying and corporate power in the political decision-making process.

Zali Steggall (OAM, MP), Federal Member for Warringah

Hosted by Michelle Rawson, local Berowra electorate resident and member of Voices of Berowra. Towards the end of the session there will be a chance for the audience to mingle and ask questions.
